The figure is a line graph showing the percentage of deaths in the United States during 2000–2018, by place of death, based on data from the National Vital Statistics System. Deaths from all causes that occurred in a hospital decreased from 48.0% in 2000 to 35.1% in 2018; during 2000-2018, deaths that occurred in the home increased from 22.7% to 31.4%, and those that occurred in a long-term care facility (hospice, nursing home, long-term care) increased from 22.9% to 26.8%.

Abbreviation: LTC = long-term care.

* Percentage was calculated as the number of deaths occurring in a location divided by all deaths with known location, multiplied by 100.

Excludes deaths in which decedent was dead on arrival at a hospital, clinic, or medical center and those for which place of death was unknown.

During that period, the percentage of deaths that occurred in the decedent’s home increased from 22.7% to 31.4%, and the percentage that occurred in a long-term care facility (hospice, nursing home, long-term care) increased from 22.9% to 26.8%.
