The figure is a bar chart showing the percentage of emergency department visits made by adults with influenza and pneumonia that resulted in hospital admission, by age group, in United States during 2017–2018. During these years, 37.2% of emergency department visits for influenza and pneumonia by adults aged ≥18 years resulted in a hospital admission. The percentage increased with age from 14.4% for adults aged 18–54 years to 46.9% for adults aged 55–74 years and 69.7% for adults aged ≥75 years.

Influenza and pneumonia defined as any ED visit with International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) codes J09J18.

§ Based on a sample of visits to EDs in noninstitutional general and short-stay hospitals, exclusive of federal, military, and Veterans Administration hospitals, located in the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia.

During 2017–2018, 37.2% of ED visits for influenza and pneumonia by adults aged ≥18 years resulted in a hospital admission. The percentage increased with age from 14.4% for adults aged 18–54 years to 46.9% for adults aged 55–74 years and 69.7% for adults aged ≥75 years.
