We are deeply saddened by the passing of Brian Hayden, a participant in CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers® (Tips®) campaign and a proud military veteran, husband to his beloved wife Denise, father, grandfather and friend. Brian was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), had a heart attack and bypass surgery, a heart transplant, lung cancer, and part of his lung removed, all due to cigarette smoking.

Despite his multiple health conditions, Brian never wavered in his willingness to share his story as part of the Tips campaign, appearing in multiple ads. Brian was passionate about keeping young people from starting to smoke and encouraging people who did smoke to quit. He would take any opportunity to talk to anyone wanting to quit and gave them his best tips for quitting. He sincerely wanted people not to have to go through the health problems he struggled with most of his life.  His story saved lives.

Brian will always be remembered by CDC for his courageous dedication to help warn others about the dangers of cigarette smoking and encouraging them to quit. We extend our deep condolences to Brian’s family, friends, and all who knew and cared about him.
